Curriculum

OUR CURRICULUM

t+centres aims to achieve a balance between:

-> a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum which is similar to that followed in a mainstream school, with emphasis on the core subjects of English, Maths, Science and IT;

-> subjects which form the basis of study for future careers (for example: Art & Design Technology, Food Technology and Motor Mechanics); and

-> social and learning activities tailored to meet each student's social, emotional and behavioural needs.

We offer Humanities, Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Religious Studies, Psychology, Preparation for Working Life, Media Studies, Citizenship and Modern Foreign Language. All subjects can be taught up to GCSE level, with accreditation for other levels available, for example Levels 1 & 2. Other vocational subjects are also offered, for example Catering. Should a student wish to study a subject which is not currently available, we will make every effort to offer this off-site or by hiring a suitable tutor.

The curriculum is reviewed regularly to make sure it reflects the needs of the school and of each individual student. All teachers are experienced in their fields and are fully trained to teach certain subjects as specialisms and others to a high standard. Subject teachers are responsible for planning lessons that are accessible to, and differentiated for, every pupil. Teachers are supported by SEN Teaching Assistants, who can meet the level of support required by each student.

CAREERS AND DESTINATIONS

We work closely with Careers South West to create the best outcomes for all of our students, and to ensure that when they leave they have a clear career path and the right qualifications to pursue this.

Most students leave t+centres to go on to college to pursue various trades or courses, whilst others make use of apprenticeships. Previous students have followed courses in Accountancy, Public Services, Gamekeeping, Photography and the Building Trade (Plastering). Several have entered the Catering trade.

We take great pride and pleasure in seeing students come back to visit the centre with news of their progress and success!

OUTDOOR EDUCATION AND BUSHCRAFT

Outdoor education is an essential element of what we offer at t+centres, giving students the opportunity to learn more about Cornwall and the West Country through a thematic, cross-curricular approach which takes in Geography, History, Physical Education and other subjects. Students enjoy exploring the fabulous Cornish countryside (in all weathers!), learning a range of bushcraft and survival skills, while they build their confidence, and develop teamwork and leadership skills.
